Author | Topic: Muslim march in London | llamatl I'm Dreaming of a White Sale
| posted 25 May, 2006 09:12 PM I was forwarded an email with a bunch of attached photos of a Muslim "protest" in london. The signs the protesters are carrying are just a little too unbelievable. It looks like they are all in the same handwriting. Is there any truth to these photos?
The email reads:
Below I have enclosed pictures of Moslems who marched throughout the streets of London during their recent Religion of Peace Demonstration.
These pictures have never been shown in any of our American newspapers or television news programs because we should never appear to offend anyone!
Why would anyone think that we should be at war with such nice, peaceful Moslems?!

My comments aren't directed at you, llamatl, but at the person who wrote the email.
Also, isn't "Moslem" a derogatory spelling of "Muslim"?

| posted 25 May, 2006 09:41 PM No, this was a real march. The BBC reported it and you can see the same kind of pictures in the photo.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4682262.stm
I would point out that it was a pretty small march (there was a larger, peaceful march against the cartoons a week later I believe; see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4726472.stm ).
And for the person who sent you this email?
1) The US is not "at war" with these people - they are British; 2) I didn't realise it was actually a war against Muslims! Here I was thinking it was a war against terror (or something).

| posted 25 May, 2006 09:51 PM Both "Moslem" and "Muslim" are transliterations. I don't *think* one is considered any more derogatory than the other. Unless you mean in the same way that people who say "Eye-raq" generally have something hostile to say about it.
ETA: Well, what do you know. Apparently "Muslim" is now considered more pc, as "Moslem" seems closer to the word for "oppressor." Still don't think "Moslem" is derogatory, though, unless its specifically meant that way. Still, *hastily changes "Moslem" to "Muslim" in current article*.

| posted 25 May, 2006 10:41 PM I sometimes wonder if changes in transliteration styles are actual advances -- like scientific progress -- or mere changes in fashion -- like hemlines going up and down.
My *sense* is that we're actually making real progress in working out conventions of transliteration that are closer and closer to the actual native-language pronunciation. Certainly "Beijing" is closer than "Peking," which is a bit closer than "Peiping."
But some changes are merely stylistic or political: "Hindoo" to "Hindu," for instance. The two sound exactly the same, but the latter has a bit more "dignity" in English; it doesn't evoke the "boo-hoo, poo, doo, goo" connotations that the former does.

| posted 26 May, 2006 06:22 PM Moslem is the transliteration of the Turkish or Persian word for Muslim and Musselman is the transliteration of the various Indian words for Muslim (Kashmiri -- Misarman). And what Chloe said about Moslem sometimes being pronounced like mawslem.
The earliest Muslims with whom Europeans had dealings were Turks, so naturally, their word for Muslims entered European languages first.
quote:Originally posted by Silas Sparkhammer: Certainly "Beijing" is closer than "Peking," which is a bit closer than "Peiping." Beijing and Peking are pronounced the same. The reason Wade-Giles was abandoned was because the transliterations made sense for linguists but not for the general population, who pronounced the letters the way they would be pronounced in their native tongue. In Wade-Giles, "pe" is pronounced "bay" and "king" is pronounced "jing". The way most Westerners pronounced Peking was if it had been written P'ek'ing.
"Tao" shows the same issue -- it's meant to be pronounced "dao". To get the sound "tao", one would write T'ao.
Peip'ing is an historical name for Beijing.

| posted 27 May, 2006 11:30 AM Sofyan, there are millions of muslims living in western countries. Not to say that prejudice is non-existent but I think you'll find very few people are offensive or rude. (And, frankly, almost anyone can be the victim of prejudice.) I hope you do get a chance to go to western countries and I hope your experience is good. I think for the majority of muslims who travel it is a good experience. (I'm not muslim so I do not speak from personal experience. But I have met many in my travels.) Posts: 4922 | From: Kyoto, Japan | Registered: Sep 2005 | IP: Logged | |

| posted 27 May, 2006 03:46 PM I agree with Ganzfeld. The media attention is skewing things both ways, the Moslem-haters are about as significant in the west as the terrorists are among the Moslems. Both are a very tiny minority that get way too much attention.
